Running in Various Weather Conditions

The human body reacts differently during cold weather. Under conditions of cold temperatures, the surface of blood vessels contract, blood flow is comparatively slow and there is reduced flexibility of the muscles and joints within the body. Therefore, during such weather conditions, runners must ensure that they are properly equipped in order to keep their hands, body and ears warm whilst running to prevent freezing. This will also help in preventing sport injuries.

You should ensure that you run outdoors for an appropriate amount of time during extremely hot weather conditions. Otherwise, it can result in heat strokes. During such hot weather conditions, avoid running when the heat emitted by the sun is at its peak. Instead, run during the early mornings and evenings when there is comparatively lesser heat. You can also carry out your running activities indoors by using a treadmill.

Furthermore, during windy days, it is comparatively difficult to breath while running. In such situations, it is essential for you to control the rhythm and intensity of running. You should try not to breathe too fast as it can choke your throat and causing coughing. However, if there is a persistence of strong winds, you should run indoors as it is much safer.

Running during foggy weather conditions can cause no harm to one’s health. However, it can be slightly dangerous if the fog is too thick and impairs vision. Consequently, in such situations, it is safer for you to run slowly to prevent the risks of facing injuries or accidents.
During conditions of rainfall, pavements could be slippery; therefore, you should run slowly in order to avoid slipping. There are certain running shoes which are appropriate for rainy weather conditions. Using such shoes would be a good and safe idea.

Humidity itself does not cause problem while running. But, humidity causes indirect problems for runners. This is because in humid conditions, evaporation of sweat becomes difficult. This results in a dramatic increase in body temperature, which is unsafe. To avoid this, you should run towards the wind direction and your back should be along the wind direction.

Furthermore, during snow, there is a risk of experiencing frostbite. The runner should therefore be strictly equipped and should wear proper clothing while running in such conditions. Make sure your head and feet are adequately warm. Take smaller steps with faster frequency in order to avoid ankle injuries since the ground is not completely flat due to the presence of snow.
